The 20-year-old forward has been the Reds stand-out player throughout much of the current campaign, while he also looked refreshed tonight – playing just his second game after returning from an extended winter break.

Below, we compare Sterling’s progress with two other of England’s emerging talents – West Brom’s Saido Berahino and Tottenham’s Harry Kane. Which will enjoy the most success in their future careers?

No-nonsense Tony Pulis could be the perfect manager to oversee the next stage of Berahino’s development. After an outstanding start to the season, which quickly saw him become the Premier League’s leading English goalscorer, the 21-year-old’s progress slowed, while his goals dried up for the last couple of months of 2014. Apparent interest from Liverpool and Tottenham, as well as question marks over his attitude could hardly have been easy to deal with for a player who few had ever heard of this time last year. Berahino now looks set to stay put, according to the Daily Mail, while the goals have begun to flow again. He’s already experienced the England squad late last year and will now be aiming for a first cap.
