Van Gaal is known to challenge stars no matter their reputation.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has warned Victor Valdes that he must show his quality at reserve level before he gets a chance in the first team.

Valdes was signed in January on a free transfer following his release from Barcelona and a break-down in negotiations with Monaco due to his cruciate ligament injury.

It was thought that the Spaniard may get a chance in the cup competitions, but Van Gaal has decided to continue with his no.1 David de Gea.

“When you are out for more than a year, first of all you have to show yourself at a lower level,” Van Gaal told reporters (via Mirror).

“He has to do it in the second team. Like Ashley Young is doing that, like Michael Carrick has to do that. It is always the same. I think it is normal.”

With de Gea’s future not secure, Valdes may become the clubs no.1 in the foreseeable future.
