Jose Mourinho has been scouting the 22 year old Argentine in recent months and may deem the San Siro man a more capable back-up option to Diego Costa than the likes of veteran Didier Drogba and bit-part player Loic Remy.

Icardi, who is Serie A’s top scorer despite Roberto Mancini’s side sitting in mid-table, is said to be in contract talks with the Nerazzurri but this doesn’t appear to have dampened the Blues enthusiastic pursuit of the former Sampdoria man.

Chelsea are ready to stump up £22m for Icardi and with Inter unlikely to secure a Champions League berth for next term one imagines that the Premier League table toppers would be in with a good shot of luring the youngster to West London.

37 year old Ivorian Drogba is out of contract in the summer and it’s fair to say that Remy, who moved to Chelsea from QPR last summer, has failed to impress when called upon and as such a move for Icardi is a plausible one.

Icardi has netted 14 goals in 20 Serie A starts this season.
