The England international is alleged to have engaged in activity with a 15 year-old, according to the BBC, but has been allowed to leave police custody without charge.
Daily Telegraph reporter Luke Edwards summed up the situation:
Adam Johnson has been released on bail by police. Not innocent. Not guilty. Not charged with an offence yet. Investigations ongoing.

Sunderland had earlier suspended the attacking midfielder pending the outcome of the investigation.
