The Mancunian side have been picking up plenty of points, but despite four wins in their last six matches, they could only manage a disappointing draw with West Ham, and lost to Swansea City. There has also been heavy criticism of the playing style that Louis van Gaal is implementing at Old Trafford, with fans labelling it boring and ineffective.

However, it would seem that the coaching staff at the club disagree with this, and are confident that United will be challenging for the title in the near future.

Giggs said: “Winning trophies just gives you confidence going into the next season. We have got title-winning form the last three months. We have proved it. You have to do it over nine months and that is difficult to do in a very tough league. But that will definitely be the aim next season.”

He added: “You have got to be sensible. It has been a bit of a turbulent couple of years. We were champions two years ago but it is going to take us a bit of time to get back to winning leagues. Without a shadow of a doubt that is the aim, it is not just about getting in the Champions League.”
