Manchester United manager challenges squad to aim higher than a top-four finish

It appears that Louis van Gaal won’t be satisfied just to finish in the top-four this season, according to the Telegraph he has told his players they are still in with a chance of pipping Chelsea to the league title.

The Red Devils are just eight points behind the league leaders going into the weekend having played a game more and while the target this season has always been to secure Champions League qualification, Van Gaal side insists that a late season title charge is possible:

“We can still win the title mathematically .We can do that,” he said. “When there was a lot of criticism after 16 points from 11 games I said we will be fighting at the end of the season. It is still a rat race.” he said in his press conference (via Telegraph)

Upcoming games against Manchester City and Chelsea will ultimately determine if they are genuine title contenders, but they are in a good run of form and look favourites to at least finish in the top-four come the end of the season.

On Saturday they face a resurgent Aston Villa side that are still looking for points in their battle to avoid relegation, but a win for United at Old Trafford could see them end the Bank holiday weekend in second place depending on Arsenal and Manchester City results.
