The Citizens lost 4-2 to their fierce local rivals, leaving them in fourth place in the Premier League and in serious danger of having to take part in a play off to feature in the Champions League next season. This is a big drop in fortunes after winning the top flight last time round, finishing six places higher than their Old Trafford neighbours.

The Sky Sports pundit said: “They were tactically done by United here today. They could not handle United’s positions on the pitch. It wasn’t just a case of City coming here and getting outfought. They were actually outplayed. They didn’t know what to do.”

The Sky Blues have now lost four of their last six games in the division, as well as dropping out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage with two losses to Barcelona in the same run of games. Manager Manuel Pellegrini has come under increasing pressure as a result.
