The 21 year old has enjoyed a superb season on loan at Middlesbrough this season, winning the Championship player of the year award, netting 19 goals in all competitions.

It’s likely that Bamford will struggle to secure much playing time at Stamford Bridge next season with the likes of Diego Costa and Loic Remy vying for striking spots, and ESPN claims Chelsea may be open to loaning the forward to a Premier League side next term.

Chelsea signed Bamford from Nottingham Forest in January 2012 and he is yet to play a single senior fixture for the club and as such may well be reticent about returning to the Blues squad just to sit on the bench.

Southampton may well have European football to offer Bamford as boss Ronald Koeman looks to steer his south-coast side to a top six finish.
