The 27-year-old was a United target six years ago when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge, but he opted to head for the Spanish capital instead.

However, their interest is back on as Louis Van Gaal searches for a replacement for the misfiring Radamel Falcao.

Benzema has been in prolific form during his time in Spain, as his 22 goals this term took him to an impressive tally of 124 in 242 since arriving from Lyon for £25m back in 2009.

The Frenchman only recently penned a new contract at the Bernabeu, but faces an uncertain future city the club following Carlo Ancelotti’s sacking at the weekend.

Talks between the two are likely to be underway at some point, as Real are keen on bringing David de Gea back to La Liga.

Arsenal are also said to be interested, and United will have to offer something they cannot.
