The pundit believes that Arsene Wenger needs to drastically improve the spine of his side by bringing in a new goalkeeper, centre-back, defensive midfielder, and striker. This is to bridge the 12 point gap there was between the Gunners and their Stamford Bridge rivals at the end of last season.

The North London club did manage to win the FA Cup with their current squad though, beating fierce rivals Manchester United on the way to defending the trophy they picked up in 2014. However, Carragher still thinks that the Emirates outfit need strengthening, similarly to how Jose Mourinho brought in Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas last summer.

The Anfield legend said: “Wenger has been and still is a great manager but the next step has to be a proper title challenge at least. You see the players coming off the bench today shows the squad strength but the first 11 still needs an upgrade in goal, CB (centre-back), DM (defensive midfielder) and CF (centre forward).

“Arsenal in the last few months have looked like a top team and are only 3/4 players through the spine of the team away from Chelsea but, are those players out there? If so will Wenger make that statement with his signings that says we’re going for the title like Jose (Mourinho) last year?”

With a whole summer still ahead of Arsenal it will have to be seen if Wenger repeats the transfer coups of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez this time round.
