Arsenal are set to receive an offer from Atletico Madrid this summer for the signing of midfielder Santi Cazorla, but Arsene Wenger won’t let one of his star men leave on the cheap.
According to the Daily Star, Diego Simeone is set to make a move for the Gunners playmaker after tracking his progress for two years. Wenger is understood to be prepared to listen to offers for the Spain international, but the British newspaper state that the French manager will only assess sizeable bids from the Liga BBVA outfit.
The report claims that Simeone wants the 30-year-old to replace Arda Turan – who is currently assessing offers from Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United [London Evening Standard] after the Turkey midfielder’s agent revealed that he would be leaving the Estadio Vicente Calderon this summer.
Cazorla scored seven goals and registered 11 assists in 43 appearances for the north London giants last season, and was a key player in the second-half of the campaign as Arsenal threatened Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table.
Nonetheless, with younger central midfielders Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil competing for places, Wenger is not short of options in the centre of the park, and perhaps could consider Cazorla as expendable.
However, Simeone may struggle to sign the former Malaga star, as he has previously voiced his desire to return to boyhood club Real Oviedo [via International Business Times].
