Manchester United have reportedly been handed a major boost in their efforts to re-sign Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, according to the Metro.

Paris Saint-Germain are also mentioned as potential suitors for the Portuguese international, who is supposedly unsettled at the Bernabeu ahead of the new season, with incoming manager Rafael Benitez set to build his team around Gareth Bale instead.

Ronaldo and Bale have not always looked compatible on the pitch together, with Madrid struggling last season as they finished trophyless and put in some below-par displays despite fielding a star-studded attack of Ronaldo, Bale and other big names like Karim Benzema and James Rodriguez.

This could all be good news for United as they look to put together a team capable of challenging Chelsea more strongly for the Premier League title in 2015/16, with Louis van Gaal already making the exciting signing of Memphis Depay from PSV to follow on from his big spending last summer.

There’s no doubt Ronaldo would be welcomed back at Old Trafford with open arms after a hugely successful first spell with the club between 2003 and 2009, when he guided the club to three Premier League titles and the Champions League.

The 30-year-old has only risen in stature since moving to Spain, scoring an incredible 313 goals in 300 games for Los Blancos to establish himself as one of the finest players of his generation.
