Medical today: Manchester United close to sealing transfer of Champions League winner

Manchester United look on the verge of completing another big summer transfer deal, this time seeing a player head out of Old Trafford as Le Parisien reports that Angel Di Maria is having a medical in Doha ahead of joining Paris Saint-Germain.

The Argentine international seems set to end a disappointing one-year spell at Old Trafford, having joined for what the BBC claimed was a club-record deal of £59.7m just last summer after looking a world class talent in his time at Real Madrid.

Di Maria arrived at United on the back of a superb campaign for Real, during which he won the Champions League and was awarded the Man of the Match award in the final win over Atletico Madrid (confirmed via the Daily Mail), but he could not replicate that kind of performance in his time in the Premier League.

Still, his credentials in the game look to have earned him a big move to Ligue 1 champions PSG, who will reportedly pay €65m for him, or roughly £45.8m.

This could go down as good business for United for a player who looks past his best, though many fans will be disappointed to see a big-money and big-name signing fail to succeed at the club after his eagerly-anticipated arrival last summer.

As well as his quality when he’s at his best, Di Maria’s experience in the big competitions, having won the Champions League with Real and having also reached the World Cup final with Argentina, could prove vital in this relatively youthful squad, which has bid farewell to other experienced winners like Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra in quick succession in recent times.

Still, Louis van Gaal has brought in another Champions League winner this summer in Bastian Schweinsteiger, who also won the World Cup last year after his Germany side beat Di Maria’s Argentina in the final of the competition.

Elsewhere, Barcelona winger Pedro is another hugely experienced and successful player being linked wiht the club as a replacement for Di Maria, according to the Daily Mail.

PSG, meanwhile, will hope that the addition of the 27-year-old United flop could be another step towards their quest to improve in Europe’s top club competition next season.
