Chelsea: Will Jose Mourinho pick John Terry against West Brom?

Posted by

Chelsea legend John Terry was an imperious figure for the Pensioners last season as Jose Mourinho’s side won the Premier League.

Despite his advancing years, the former England captain played every minute of every match for the West London side and was a consistent and imposing performer for the Blues.

However, he has started the new season badly, and after a pair of poor performances, his future is in doubt.

The veteran was unduly troubled by Swansea City’s forwards during an opening-day 2-2 draw, before being hauled off at half-time against Manchester City as Sergio Aguero ran riot.

Last weekend he was replaced by Kurt Zouma, and it remains to be seen whether Mourinho will opt to pursue the young Frenchman in the heart of his defence, or whether he will hand a reprieve to stalwart Terry.

The Portuguese coach’s decision against the Baggies may well prove to be a valuable indicator as to whether Mourinho himself believes Terry has passed his peak.

Even if the controversial captain survives the cull against the Throstles, his days as Chelsea’s first-choice in the heart of the defence may be numbered.

The Stamford Bridge heavyweights have been heavily linked with a move for Everton defender John Stones, while Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane has been the subject of inquiries from Chelsea.

In the long-term (or even by the end of the transfer window) either man may be crowned as Terry’s successor. For now, however, it remains to be seen whether Mourinho will back Zouma, or give his long-serving skipper another chance.
