Arsenal linked with late swoop for 29-goal striker with £69.1m release clause

Arsenal could be set to launch a deadline day bid to sign Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain in a late attempt to solve their problems up front, according to Spanish journalist Kike Marin.

The Argentine international has a release clause of £69.1m, according to the Metro, while Corriere dello Sport [via the Daily Star] claimed earlier this summer that the player himself could try to force a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal are known to be in the market for a new signing up front this summer, with the Daily Mail reporting that any potential move for Karim Benzema was over after the forward decided to remain with current club Real Madrid instead of moving to north London.

Higuain would certainly be a fine alternative, with the 27-year-old still at his peak and possibly joining on the back of another superbly prolific season in Italy, in which he netted 29 goals in all competitions.

Still, his fine form couldn’t guide the club into the Champions League, and it may be that the Star’s report from earlier this summer had some truth to it as Arsenal playing in Europe’s top club competition would no doubt be a big pull factor.

The Gunners moved for Danny Welbeck on deadline day last summer, while Mesut Ozil was also a late arrival the previous year, suggesting a big name like Higuain moving late on is not out of the question.
