Video: Alberto Moreno disallowed goal – sublime volley ruled out as Liverpool robbed at Newcastle

Alberto Moreno was robbed of a goal of a lifetime as his sublime volley was wrongly disallowed in Liverpool’s shock 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park this afternoon.

Georginio Wijnaldum’s second-half brace earned the Magpies three crucial Premier League points, but things could have been very different had this cracker from Moreno been allowed to stand.

As replays showed, the full-back was a couple of yards onside when James Milner superbly picked him out at the back post for an outstanding finish which would have brought the Reds level at 1-1.

But the assistant referee raised his flag and denied Liverpool a chance to push for victory, although they deserved to leave Tyneside empty handed after arguably their worst display under Jurgen Klopp.

Wijnaldum put Newcastle ahead on 69 minutes when his shot deflected in off Martin Skrel. Moussa Sissoko provided the Dutchman with a stoppage-time second to seal three vital points for the Magpies.

Victory for Steve McClaren’s men does not lift them out of the relegation zone, but they are now level on points with 17th-place Bournemouth. Liverpool stay seventh after a second league defeat in four.
