UEFA bends rules to do Manchester United favour ahead of Europa League tie with Liverpool

Manchester United will have the luxury of home comforts in preparation for their Europa League tie with Liverpool after being granted special dispensation by UEFA, according to Sky Sports.

Sky Sports reports that UEFA will allow the Red Devils to train and stay at their usual bases, despite them being outside of the catchment set within current guidelines for visiting sides.

UEFA rules state that away teams must stay within 27 miles of the host’s stadium the day before a game. The Salford hotel that United stay in before domestic away trips is 34 miles away from Anfield.

And United’s Carrington training ground is seven miles outside of the usual distance permitted, but UEFA will allow them to remain in Manchester after an appeal from the Old Trafford club.

Sky Sports understands that Louis van Gaal and his players are expected to train at Carrington on Wednesday morning, and travel to Liverpool the following day for this historic matchup.

The two great English rivals have never met in European competition before, so North-West bragging rights are on the line as well as a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
