Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang goal video v Tottenham: Wimmer the Joker as Batman gets 33rd of season

Tottenham Hotspur became the latest victims of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goalscoring heroics tonight as the Borussia Dortmund striker netted the opener in their Europa League clash.

The Gabonese, who often performs Batman-themed celebrations according to the Daily Mail, expertly found the bottom corner with this header from Marcel Schmelzer’s cross – his 33rd goal of the season.

If the 26-year-old is Batman, then Tottenham’s Kevin Wimmer is the Joker in this instance, and not in the sense that he is Aubameyang’s great, equally-matched, adversary. In the other sense…

The Spurs centre-back had Aubameyang in his sights when he nonsensically wandered across his own box to mark space, leaving the Dortmund forward to get a run on Ben Davies and nod home.

Wimmer has done a decent job deputising for Jan Vertonghen since the defender picked up an injury, but this is an example of where Spurs missed the Belgian’s experience and positional sense.

Aubameyang previously had a goal disallowed for offside as Dortmund thoroughly dominated the opening 45 minutes of this round-of-16 first leg. They could have been two or three up at the break.

If Tottenham, who have rested several key players such as Harry Kane, Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier, can get back to White Hart Lane with no further damage, they would have had a lucky escape.
