Southampton star and Chelsea transfer target to miss the EFL Cup final after being ruled out for up to three months

Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk has been ruled out for three months and will subsequently miss his side’s EFL Cup final clash with Manchester United, report the Mirror.

van Dijk has firmly established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League this campaign, and it certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed. According to the Mirror, Chelsea are interested in securing his services as Antonio Conte looks to bolster his options along his back-three.

However, van Dijk’s stellar season appears to have been derailed by an ankle injury. The Mirror report that the Dutchman is set to miss up to three months with an injury he sustained during his side’s 3-0 victory over Leicester City in January.

That means he will be sidelined when the Saints face Man United at Wembley in the EFL Cup final, which is a huge blow for his side, and undoubtedly a huge disappointment for him on a personal level.
