The Sun today brings us news of the latest poor lad dragooned into captaining the England side, journo Shaun Custis writes:
“Steven Gerrard will be Fabio Capello’s first captain.
“But the position of permanent England skipper is still up for grabs.
“Boss Capello has settled on the experienced Liverpool midfielder as leader for his first game in charge against Switzerland at Wembley next Wednesday.”
Apparently in Capello’s native country of Italy the captains armbands is treated like a hot potato, a position that is chopped and changed on a whim to very little fanfare, but in England for some reason wearing the captains armband is seen as becoming part of a bloodline including Shakespeare, William Churchill, and King Arthur. Will Capello recognise this
lunacy proud tradition, and more importantly, will Stevie G make a decent England captain?
