For Curtis Davies, it’s a no-brainer when having to choose which winger he wants in his team. The Aston Villa defender believes that his team-mate is taking the Premier League by storm right now, and he wouldn’t swap him for anyone, not even a player who managed 40+ goals in all competitions last season.
Setanta report that the former West Brom player has the prayer beads out in the hope that Ashley Young signs a new contract at the Midlands club. The ex-Watford winger has been in superlative form since the season began, and scored a pearler of a free-kick against Sunderland on Saturday to help his team to the three points.
“It is crucial he signs,” said Davies. “We have managed to get a core of good English players together and if we can get Ashley to sign on for another few years that will be a massive positive, not just to the club but also the lads to know he is going to be sticking around and hopefully driving us on even more.
“Would I swap him for any other winger? Not at the moment. You could talk about Ronaldo but the way Ash plays – right or left – I don’t think anyone can cope with it when he whips balls in.”
Many, including myself, would argue that Ashley Young should be in the England squad if indeed Fabio Capello is selecting players based on performance. After all, this guy is shining every week in the claret and blue of Aston Villa. However, if forced to choose between him and Cristiano Ronaldo, surely the vast majority of us would still choose the Red Devils number seven?
