Atletico Madrid have opened the door to Fernando Torres returning to the club according to Sky Sports.

Torres made his name at Madrid where his clinical finishing and rapid pace earned him a big money move to Liverpool.

But Torres has failed to replicate that form for Chelsea since joining from Liverpool for £50 million in 2011.

The player has hit the back of the net just 14 times in 74 league appearances and it appears the Stamford Bridge side have finally run out of patience with the misfiring striker.

Chelsea have been linked with the likes of Radamel Falcao, Edinson Cavani and Pierre-Emerick Aumbameyang in recent weeks and Torres’ days in a Chelsea shirt look numbered.

But Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has suggested he would welcome Torres back at the club. Simeone and Torres previously played together at Madrid during the Argentine’s playing days and the current Vicente Calderon boss believes he can help Torres return to the form that saw him become one of the most feared strikers in the game.

Chelsea are thought to be keen to recoup a fair amount of the £50 million they spent on bringing him to the club but could be tempted to give Atletico the player as a makeweight in a deal for Radamel Falcao.
