France striker Karim Benzema was roundly booed by the country’s fans after a disappointing display in their side’s defeat to Spain according to El Pais.

Les Bleus went down to a 1-0 defeat to the World Cup champions in Saint Denis and their fans were not happy with the teams display as Spain replaced them at the top of their World Cup qualification group.

Real Madrid striker received the brunt of the abuse after his fruitless performance means he has now gone 1001 minutes with a goal for the French national team.

The last time Benzema hit the back of the net was during his side’s 4-0 victory over Estonia in June 2012.

When the striker was eventually replaced by Newcastle’s Moussa Sissoko in the 81st minute, the St Denis crowd ensure Benzema was fully aware of their dissatisfaction.

Benzema has been strongly linked with a move away from Real Madrid this summer. Reports in recent weeks have suggested the Spanish giants may try and use the striker as a makeweight in any potential deal for Tottenham’s Gareth Bale or Napoli’s Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani.

Arsenal are also reportedly monitoring the player’s availability but Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has urged the club to retain the striker’s services.
