Aston Villa are said to be monitoring the situation of highly rated Walsall striker Will Grigg, The Sun reports.

The 21-year-old has caught the eye of a number of teams this season by bagging 18 goals in 40 games for the Saddlers as they unexpectedly continue to push for promotion into the Championship.

Grigg has formed a deadly partnership with ex-Manchester United ace, Febian Brandy, and has already collected two caps for the Norther Irish national side.

Boss Paul Lambert is keeping tabs on the Ulster-man ahead of a proposed summer shake up at Villa Park that will see a number of established stars head through the exit as the club continue their quest to lower the wage bill. With Darren Bent set to move on and doubts over Christian Benteke’s future Lambert will be seeking cheaper options to add to his firing line.

Villa brought in a number of stars from the lower leagues last summer with Joe Bennett, Ashley Westwood, Matt Lowton and Jordan Bowery all arriving from sides between the Championship and League 2.

Birmingham born Grigg first broke into the Walsall side in 2010 but it has taken him up until now to make a meaningful impact on the squad. His current deal runs out in June and Walsall have offered him a two-year extension, but the players agent, Dan Wood said; “It is understandable that Will has caught the eye with his performances this season.”
