Villa boss reveals club and player have been in discussions for weeks.
Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert has revealed he is confident that a new deal will be concluded for Christian Benteke soon according to The Metro.
Lambert revealed that player and club have been in negotiations over new terms for a number of weeks and he expected Benteke to put pen to paper in the near future.
Benteke has been one of his side’s star players since arriving from Genk last summer. Lambert initially raised a few eyebrows when he dropped the more established Darren Bent to make room in the team for Benteke but the Belgian’s form soon justified Lambert’s decision.
Benteke finished his highly impressive debut season with nineteen Premier League goals and was one of the front-runners for the PFA Young Player of the Year Award.
The Belgian youngster still has three years remaining on his current deal but the club are keen to offer him improved terms in order to ward off potential suitors.
The likes of Tottenham and Chelsea are thought to be preparing summer bids for the player but Villa are determined to keep hold of Benteke.
Villa are set to double the player’s wages in an attempt to ensure he stays at the club for at least one more season.
