Departing Blues boss keen to sign Brazilian for new club.
Departing interim Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez is eyeing up a sensational double swoop on two of his former players, according to Football Italia.
The newly-appointed Napoli boss has supposedly made Chelsea’s Ramires and Barcelona’s Javier Mascherano, whom he worked with at Liverpool, his main targets.
Brazil international Ramires has established himself as a key player for Chelsea since joining the club in 2010, and it seems unlikely that the Blues will want to sell the 26-year-old after another fine season.
However, it is possible that incoming Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will have his own plans for reshaping the squad at Stamford Bridge, and may be willing to part with Ramires to bring in targets such as Daniele De Rossi and Luka Modric.
Barcelona are also set for a summer of change, after a difficult season where they were often second best against the bigger sides, despite their dominant La Liga win.
Mascherano is one player who could make way, as the Argentine has often been used as a makeshift defender at the Nou Camp, rather than his preferred defensive midfield role.
The 28-year-old first developed into a world class performer under Benitez at Liverpool, and may welcome the chance to reunite with his old boss and play in midfield again at Napoli.
Benitez has been linked with a number of other of his former players as well, such as Chelsea’s Fernando Torres and Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel.
