After weeks of speculation Chelsea have official announced the appointment of Jose Mourinho as the permanent successor to Rafa Benitez as the manager of the Stamford Bridge side.

The 50 year old Portuguese boss managed the West London club from June 2004 to September 2007, helping Chelsea to two Premier League titles, two League Cup triumphs and an FA Cup success.

Chelsea’s chief executive Ron Gourlay stated via the club’s official website:

‘I am delighted to welcome Jose back to Chelsea. His continued success, drive and ambition made him the outstanding candidate.

‘It is our aim to keep the club moving forward to achieve greater success in the future and Jose is our number one choice as we believe he is the right manager to do just that.

‘He was and remains a hugely popular figure at the club and everyone here looks forward to working with him again.’

Mourinho’s three season spell at the Bernabeu was a troubled one for the former Inter Milan and FC Porto manager, mired by in-fighting and an ultimately unsuccessful one in terms of a tangible return for his efforts.

Though he guided Real Madrid to a La Liga triumph in 2011/12 he was unable to prevent Barcelona from marching to another title and also saw his side lose in the Copa del Rey final to city rivals Atletico.
