Newcastle are hoping to sign Ajax midfielder Christen Eriksen as a replacement for Yohan Cababye, who looks set to move to Paris St Germain.

Cababye has been linked with a move back to France for most of the summer, with PSG and AS Monaco battling it out for the talented midfielder.

It looks like PSG are going to win the race to sign Cabaye and could pay around £20 million for midfielder, meaning Newcastle have plenty of money to spend on the Frenchman’s replacement.

It looks as though the club have made Christen Eriksen their number one target, seeing the young Danish midfielder as the perfect player to take on Cabaye’s duties at the heart of the Magpies midfield.

Eriksen has long been considered one of the best young midfielders in Europe and has been linked with a move to the Premier League for the past couple of summers.

It looks as though Eriksen will be moving away from Ajax this summer as he only has one year remaining on his current contract at the Dutch giants and it is highly unlikely that he will sign a new deal.

Many have also suggested that now is the time for the player to move away from the Netherlands and test himself in a bigger league.

Eriksen himself is keen to move to a bigger club and Ajax boss Frank De Boer has said that he will not stand in the midfielders way if he does decide to move on.

Eriksen would be an excellent replacement for Cabaye and would be a real signal of intent from Newcastle that they plan on moving back into the top half of the Premier League following a difficult 2012/2013 season when they flirted with relationship.

However, the Magpies will face plenty of opposition for the signature of Eriksen, with long time admirers Liverpool looking to add the Dane to their squad this summer.

With Eriksen only having one year remaining on his Ajax contract, Newcastle could sign the midfielder for around £15 million, a bargain considering the Magpies will probably receive a £20 million transfer fee from the Cabaye sale.

Signing Eriksen would be a real boast for Newcastle but they look set to battle it out with some big teams for the signature of the talented midfielder.
