Monaco have further added to the considerable array of talents this summer by adding Spanish under-19 captain Borja Lopez from Sporting Gijon, Sky Sports reports.

The central defender has put pen-to-paper on a four year deal with the principality side after a fee of around €2.2 million (£1.9 million) was accepted and he was presented at the club on Friday.

He confirmed the signing by posting a photo of his presentation on Twitter along with the message:

“Very happy to have signed with Monaco until 2017.”

The 19-year-old made 19 appearances for the side from northern Spain in the Segunda Division last season and joins the Ligue 1 newcomers with a high pedigree, as he is the captain of Spain’s feted under-19 squad. Lopez played every game in Spain’s campaign at the UEFA Under-19 tournament in Lithuania in last month until they were eliminated at the semi-final stage by France.

“The club thank the footballer for his conduct on and off the pitch during his time at the club and wish him every success in the future.”

Lopez now joins Eric Abidal, Ricardo Carvalho, Jeremy Toulalan, Falcao, James Rodriguez, Joao Moutinho and Fabinho in swelling the club’s ranks ahead of the new season.
