Juventus are paving the way to strengthen their defence by setting their sights on Man United centre-back Nemanja Vidic according to the Daily Star.

Antonio Conte has brought in Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente to beef up his attack and is planning a move to bring in Serbian international Vidic on a free transfer next summer.

The Turin side have made good use of free transfer signings in recent seasons, bringing in the aforementioned Llorente, Italian veteran Andrea Pirlo and former Man United man Paul Pogba on similar deals.

Vidic has struggled with injuries in recent seasons but is still not a player Man United would let leave without a fight and a contract extension is sure to be on offer for the experienced defender.

Though David Moyes can call upon Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones to fill central defensive spots arguably when fully fit Vidic is head and shoulders above those options and as such it’s unlikely Man United would allow the player to simply run down his contract and leave on a free transfer.

Vidic moved to Old Trafford in January 2006 and has made a total of 264 appearances for the club since his £7m move to the English top tier.
