Tottenham are set to revive their interest in Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, once they sell Gareth Bale this summer, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Belgian forward was a must-sign target for Tottenham this summer, before he renewed his contract at Villa this summer, after Spurs failed to meet the £25million asking price. Looking to add to their attacking options should they sell Gareth Bale, Spurs are ready to make another effort to sign him.

Tottenham are nearing an agreement to sell Gareth Bale to Real Madrid this summer for a reported £100million fee, and will need to act fast to reinvest it in time for the Premier League season opener. The unfortunate consequence of selling Bale, other than not having him, is clubs will raise their asking prices when Spurs come in for their players, as they know they have money they need to spend.

Villa are confident they will keep Benteke this summer, and claim his wish to leave the club are ‘in the past’. Having demanded £25million previously, and having recently signed a contract extension at the club, Villa could ask for in excess of £30million for the Belgian. Spurs will be able to offer Benteke a wage increase from his reported £50,000-a-week at Villa Park currently.

Benteke would join Jermain Defoe, Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado as Spurs ready themselves for a title challenge. The loss of Bale will be a big one, but bringing in Soldado and possibly Benteke would make up for what they lose in goal production.
