Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has said that he hopes to be able to keep David Luiz at the club despite recent interest from Barcelona, Sky Sports reports.
News emerged earlier this week that the Calan giants had set their sights on the Brazilian international and had even placed a formal bid on the table to bring him away from Stamford Bridge.
Mourinho at the time had said there was no chance of the deal going through and he has since sought to reiterate that stance.
“I have known of David Luiz from the very beginning so I know him very, very well.
“And before I came back to Chelsea, I watched him week after week.
“I see him as a centre-back because he has an important quality for a footballer – he can build from the back.
“He is very comfortable and confident with using the ball from the back – he does not play direct.
“And he can improve, especially defensively. He can be much more effective, much more solid. But the potential he has is amazing, incredible.”
Mourinho has been blessed with inheriting a highly talented and capable squad upon his return to west London and sees the 26-year-old as one of the key players central to his plans.
