Former Barcelona star becomes latest Blues signing.
Chelsea have announced the signing of Anzhi Makhachkala striker Samuel Eto’o on a one-year contract, with the 32-year-old unveiled on the club’s official website.
The Cameroon international had been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge over the last few weeks, following Chelsea’s failure to sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United.
A new striker was a priority for Mourinho due to the poor form of Fernando Torres and Demba Ba, and promising youngster Romelu Lukaku still not trusted to be first choice upfront.
Chelsea were alerted to Eto’o’s availability when Russian side Anzhi put a number of their star players up for sale due to sudden financial difficulties, with the 32-year-old possibly available for a knock-down price of around £4million. He becomes the second player to leave Anzhi for Chelsea, following Brazilian winger Willian whose signing was confirmed yesterday.
Although now only a short-term option for Chelsea, Eto’o could be an astute signing by Mourinho, who worked with the forward during their time together at Inter Milan, where they celebrated a treble in 2009/10.
Eto’o spoke of his joy at the move, saying: “It wasn’t a hard decision. I saw the qualities Chelsea have, and I was very happy with Jose Mourinho before, so when the opportunity came, I was very happy to take it.”
Eto’o is one of the finest strikers of his generation, and is best known for his successful spell with Barcelona, where he scored 129 goals in 201 games with the club, winning La Liga three times as well as the Champions League on two occasions, scoring in both final victories over Arsenal and Manchester United.
