Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will re-ignite his interest in FC Porto centre-back Eliaquim Mangala in January according to the Daily Mirror.

Mourinho attempted to bring in the 22 year old French international over the summer but a massive gulf between the two side’s valuations of the player prevented any move becoming a reality. AS Monaco are now also hovering and could therefore make the move for Mangala into something of a bidding war, which will clearly benefit the Primeira Liga side.

FC Porto have built up a strong successful model of signing up and coming talents before selling them on at a massive profit and Mangala seems set to follow in the footsteps of Radamel Falcao, Joao Moutinho, James Rodriguez, Hulk and many many others.

Mangala is seen by this source as a potential replacement for Brazilian David Luiz who has thus far made just one of Chelsea’s opening five Premier League fixtures.

FC Porto hope to garner the full £40m it would take to trigger Mangala’s release clause though Chelsea are willing to offer £20m, Monaco’s interest may well force Mourinho to adjust his thinking.

Mourinho can currently call upon a fair few top class centre-backs, with Gary Cahill, John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic in his armoury, though it does appear that the Blues boss prefers to use the Serb as a right-back, which has in turn led to Cesar Azpilicueta’s career at the West London club coming to something of a standstill.

Mangala played a key role in FC Porto’s domestic title success last term with his rock solid displays crucial to the club’s steely defence, the Estadio Dragao side conceding just 14 goals in 30 league fixtures.
