Everton are set to step up their chase for highly rated Gil Vicente midfielder Diogo Viana during the January transfer window with the hope of fending off interest from fellow Premier League side Swansea City, the Daily Mirror reports.

Toffees boss Roberto Martinez had been watching the 21-year-old over the summer but failed to make a concrete offer, deciding to bring in some solid experience into the middle in the shape of Gareth Barry instead.

However, Martinez is now prepared to go back for a second time armed with the cash after his stand out performances have made him a sought after commodity.

Viana’s club, Gil Vicente, are currently flying high in the Portuguese Premier League and Everton have been told that he may cost them around £4.2m if they want to land his signature ahead of Swansea City, who have also been monitoring his progress lately.

Championship side Blackburn Rovers actually had a deal in place for him in August, but the deal was blocked by manager Gary Bowyer.

Bowyer did not want any more Portuguese players as he didn’t rate the likes of Fabio Nunes and Diogo Rosado at Ewood Park.
