The 25 year old Spanish international has been used sparingly by Jose Mourinho this season and as such he may struggle to secure a prominent role in Vicente del Bosque’s national team set-up for the 2014 World Cup finals, and as such a move that would offer the former Valencia playing time would surely be tempting for Mata.

However it’s unlikely Jose Mourinho would be keen on allowing such a deal as it could potentially leave him short of options and having made the mistake of loaning out Romelu Lukaku to Everton, only to see the Belgian comfortably outscore the strikers who remain at Stamford Bridge a move is all the more unlikely.

Mata was the Blues’ player of the year for two seasons running prior to Mourinho’s return in the summer but has started just five of Chelsea’s opening dozen Premier League fixtures and is yet to find the back of the net and provided just a single assist, a sign that a lack of football could well be affecting his form.
