Saints chairman Nicola Cortese has remained adamant that the young Englishman is not for sale, but his board members have warned him that that is not likely to stop them from making an approach anyway.
And if the Stamford Bridge outfit cannot get Cortese to open talks with them in the new years then they are reportedly willing to bide their time until the summer.
Chelsea are said to be willing to let out of favour left-back Ryan Bertrand leave in order to make room in the squad for Shaw. There is a good chance that he will be offered to the Saints as collateral, though he is still admired by the likes of Everton, Sunderland and Liverpool.
Everton’s interest in Bertrand could mean that they are bracing themselves for a return bid from Manchester United for England man Leighton Baines.
Jose Mourinho, the Chelsea manager, this week also revealed he expects Ashley Cole to be handed a one-year contract extension.
