Chelsea have agreed an initial fee of €15m (£12.4m) for Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin, with the Premier League side now in discussions with the Colombian over the personal terms of his contract.

CaughtOffside understands that Jose Mourinho has moved to seal the deal as early as possible in view of Frank Lampard’s muscle injury, which could see the the veteran sidelined for a month.

Mourinho has been keen on luring Guarin to Stamford Bridge for some months and Inter Milan appear ready to sell the former FC Porto man, who is likely to receive a significant pay-rise following his likely move to Chelsea.

Guarin is a versatile midfielder who can play in wide roles as well as in his more frequently adopted central midfield role and the talented San Siro star is a box to box performer who is able to put in strong challenges whilst also being an excellent distributor of the ball.

Jose Mourinho will also look to bring in a striker in the January transfer window as his current striking options have failed to net regularly, leaving his creative midfielders having to shoulder a great deal of the goal-scoring burden, an issue that the Chelsea manager knows needs to be addressed if they are to secure major honours in the first season of his second spell at the club.
