Chelsea have now joined the race to sign in-demand FC Basel defender Fabian Schar in the January transfer window, according to reports on Inside Futbol.

The highly rated Switzerland international has been attracting the attentions of a whole host of big-name clubs from across the Continent of late after a string of eye-catching displays at the back for Basel so far in this campaign, with the likes of Premier League champions Manchester United, Arsenal, Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund and the Serie A duo of Juventus and Inter Milan all understood to be interested in signing Schar in January.
And now it appears as though the west London club are hoping to steal a march on all their rivals from the Continent by launching their own bid for the 22-year-old after Blues head coach Jose Mourinho was impressed by the centre back’s displays at the back for the Swiss champions in their recent clashes with Chelsea in the group phase of this season’s Uefa Champions League.
Schar has a contract at St. Jakob-Park that currently runs until June 30 2015, with Basel thought to be seeking a transfer fee of at least £8m for the coveted central defender this month.
