The Bundesliga club are said to have moved ahead into pole position in the race for the Belgian ace’s signature after a number of enquiries were made by several of their rivals.

The 22-year-old looks set to leave the Stamford Bridge outfit during the January transfer window after failing to break into the side this season, however, the club are still undecided over whether they want to let the player leave on a loan deal or a permanent switch, and that is believed to be what is delaying the move.

Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs said: “The ball is in Chelsea’s camp now.”

De Bruyne’s agent has reportedly been in Dubai this week to talk to Wolfsburg chiefs as they currently undergo a mid-season training camp there.

And De Bruyne’s agent, Patrick De Koster, has hinted that the player would favour a return to Germany rather than go anywhere else in Europe.

“We hope something might happen soon,” he said. “Kevin really wants to go to the Bundesliga.”
