Imbula was a target for the Blues last summer, but he joined up with Marseille instead after the West London side failed to agree a fee with Guingamp.
The 21-year-old has continued to impress in French football again this season, and is now being widely tipped to make an exit from the South of France as Chelsea plot a fresh move for him when the transfer window re-opens this summer.
And according to reports in France Imbula has been earmarked as a long term replacement for John Obi Mikel, who has been told that he can leave the club for a modest fee this summer.
