Cole received a call from Hodgson telling him he was not part of his 23 man squad for the summer’s tournament in Brazil and has therefore opted to give up on playing for England.

Hodgson is set to take Leighton Baines as his first choice left sided defensive option with Southampton’s Luke Shaw to act as his back-up, leaving Cole out in the cold.

Ashley Cole has spent most of the current campaign warming the bench having been frozen out of Jose Mourinho’s starting eleven, with the Blues boss opting to use Cesar Azpilicueta in the role, and will see his Chelsea contract expire in a matter of weeks.

With no new deal on the table it’s likely the former Arsenal man will be looking for a new club having become surplus to requirements at Chelsea, making just 15 Premier League starts this season.

Cole has 107 national team caps to his name.
