Is Suarez worth £80m?

Check in to Spain vs Netherlands

Real Madrid will have to match the transfer fee that they paid to Tottenham Hotspur for Gareth Bale if they are to sign Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, according to Marca.

Bale became the most expensive player on the planet when he swapped White Hart Lane for the Bernabeu in August 2013.

It is believed that Spurs received around £80m for the 24-year-old Welshman, who went on to score 15 goals and provide 12 assists in 27 La Liga games in his first season in Spain.

Bale also scored a brilliant winning goal in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, as well as netting six times in the Champions League, including with a vital header in the final last month.

Suarez enjoyed an equally brilliant season, although it was not enough to guide Liverpool to any silverware.

The Uruguayan, 27, bagged 31 goals in 33 Premier League appearances, making 12 assists in the process.

There is no doubt that Bale and Suarez are in the same league in terms of ability.

However, Suarez is two and a half years older than Bale and the Welshman has a much cleaner track record in terms of disciplinary.

While Suarez picked up just six yellow cards this season, he missed the first five games of the campaign through suspension for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic.

He has served a ban for another biting incident in the past, as well as one for racial abuse.
