Chelsea legend disappointed by Sturridge sale.
Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard admits it may not have been the best decision by the club to sell Daniel Sturridge to Liverpool in 2013, the Daily Star reports.
The 24-year-old was often a fringe player during his time at Stamford Bridge, making 96 appearances for the club and scoring just 24 goals in four seasons in their first-team, but has since gone on to establish himself as one of the best players in the Premier League at Liverpool.
Signed for just £12m by Brendan Rodgers, the England international has gone on to score 35 goals in just 49 games for the Merseyside giants, helping them finish second in the league in 2013/14 after forming a fine partnership with Uruguayan star Luis Suarez.
With Lampard and Sturridge now together on international duty for the Three Lions at this summer’s World Cup, the veteran midfielder has spoken out about his former club team-mate’s transfer to Liverpool.
The 35-year-old was full of praise for the young forward, who he admits was perhaps played out of position on the flank during his time at Chelsea, which he understands made it tempting for him to move on.
“Maybe it was not such good business for Chelsea,” Lampard told reporters.
“It looks bad but individually for him it was a good move. He has gone from strength to strength.
“And I am really pleased for Studge, because at Chelsea I think he was a bit frustrated. He felt he could have played more.
“He felt the position he was playing in was one he wasn’t quite happy with and it was good for him to move in the end.”
Lampard himself is set to leave Chelsea this summer after thirteen years with the club.
