Check in to Mexico vs Cameroon

Everton are preparing to fill the void left by the departing Romelu Lukaku by making an audacious bid to land former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o, reports talkSPORT.

The 33-year-old is currently a free agent after his contract with the Blues expired at the end of last season. He is now on international duty at the World Cup with Cameroon, but will expect to secure a deal with a new club when he returns from Brazil.

Everton have been left short up front after loan star Lukaku’s contract at Goodison Park ran out at the end of the 2013/14 campaign. They are looking for a high-class replacement who is capable of keeping the Toffees in the top six in the Premier League and Eto’o has emerged as a potential target.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker was on stellar wages at Stamford Bridge and it is questionable whether Everton will want to meet his salary demands. Clubs such as Monaco, Galatasaray and Guangzhou Evergrande of China have all also been linked with the Cameroonians’s services and they could all provide him with a chunkier weekly pay packet than the Merseysiders.

Where the Toffees may also fall short is in their lack of Champions League football, which the likes of Monaco and Galatasaray can offer Eto’o. However, a regular starting berth in the Premier League may be enough to tempt the striker into a move to Goodison Park.
