CaughtOffside understands that The Reds are keen to add to their defensive numbers this summer as the likes of Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel face uncertain futures at the club, and Rodgers is keen on taking the Spaniard away from the Santiago Bernabeu to give him a regular run of games and become a first team regular at Anfield.

Nacho came through the youth ranks in the Spanish capital, and despite featuring regularly for the club’s B team, he has made just 35 appearances for the senior side in four years.

He featured just 19 times last term, and has apparently accepted that his time at his boyhood club could well be over as he feels he needs to be playing more often at the age of 24.

He is, however, highly rated in his homeland, and in 2013 earned a call up to the Spanish national team, but his lack of involvement over the course of the campaign meant that he missed out on heading to the World Cup this summer.

The Reds are thought to be willing to offer around £8m for his services, and if talks continue into the weekend Rodgers will get to meet with the player himself and thrash out a personal terms.
