Luis Suarez’s proposed move to Barcelona is being held up by an apparent struggle by Liverpool to persuade Alexis Sanchez to move in the other direction and come to Anfield, according to the Guardian.

The two clubs have been holding talks over a deal that could see Suarez, 27, move to the Nou Camp for a fee of up to £80m, though it is understood that Barcelona are keen to get that price down to around £60m with the offer of a player in return alongside the cash.

Sanchez is the player of Liverpool’s choice, and has been a long-term target for Reds manager Brendan Rodgers, but it appears that the player himself is unsure over a move and has a preference to join Arsenal, who are one of his many other admirers this summer.

Liverpool are confident a deal can be done to suit both parties, and it is expected that Suarez will be announced as a Barcelona player by next week, one way or another.

The Uruguayan was the top scorer in the Premier League in 2013/14 with a superb record of 31 goals in 33 games, and is widely regarded as one of the best players in the world.

His ability means Barca are still ready to spend big to sign him despite his four-month ban from football after biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.
