Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has asked for his Liverpool contract to be terminated early, according to reports from the Daily Star, with the Spanish international having failed to secure a summer move away from Anfield.
Reina fell out of favour at Liverpool last summer when Brendan Rodgers signed Belgian ‘keeper Simon Mignolet from Sunderland as the player’s replacement, with Reina joining former manager Rafa Benitez at Napoli on a season-long loan.
The Italian club have been unable to find the funds to sign Reina on a permanent deal, however, whilst no La Liga club, where Reina would like a move, have come in for him either.
This has led Reina to approach the club’s hierarchy to ask for his contract to be terminated early – allowing the player to join any club on a free transfer ahead of the new season, but potentially Napoli.
Reina was Liverpool’s first choice goalkeeper for a number of years under Benitez, but more errors began to creep into his game, particularly in the single season that he spent playing under Rodgers, leading to the capture of Mignolet.
It is now known whether Liverpool will be willing to grant Reina’s request, with the club having banked on receiving a fee for his services, but getting his considerable wages off the bill may be tempting for the Reds.
