Robin van Persie to be rested for the start of the Premier League season
Robin van Persie is set to miss the start of the new Premier League season, after it was suggested that United boss Louis van Gaal was prepared to give the player a rest after his World Cup exploits.
Reports in the Daily Mirror suggests that even though the striker – 31 on Wednesday – is desperate to start in the season’s Premier League opener against Swansea at Old Trafford, Van Gaal will assert his authority by telling him that he will play only when he tells him.
The Reds’ new manager said: “Robin wants to play every game, I know that, but so do the other 30 players in the squad. But players have to train and Robin needs a full training regime behind him before he can play again.”
Van Persie returns to training on Monday following his extended leave – granted due to the Netherlands third place finish at this summer’s World Cup.
