Liverpool could be set to make a surprise bid for Barcelona right-back Dani Alves, according to Spanish source Mundo Deportivo.

Reds manager Brendan Rodgers is on the lookout for new signings in defence this summer, with full-back now a priority position for the Northern Irishman after securing the signing of Dejan Lovren from Southampton.

Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno is also thought to be one of the club’s top targets in this transfer window, but a new addition could also come in at right-back, with Liverpool keen to pounce as Barcelona look to offload Alves.

With the Catalan giants undergoing a major rebuilding process this summer, new manager Luis Enrique has seemingly made Alves the latest big name on his cull list after also allowing big names such as Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez to leave for Chelsea and Arsenal, respectively.

The Brazilian’s attacking ability from the back have made him a key player for Barca in his time with the club, and could also fit in well to Liverpool’s style of play under Rodgers.

A bid of around £5m is thought to be enough to lure the out-of-favour defender away from the Nou Camp, and he could compete with Glen Johnson for a place at right-back, with the England international in the final year of his contract.
